SMSA Funding Applications
For Student Groups
There are a number of ways for student groups to get funding for group activities. Follow the links or instructions below to apply. Email the SMSA Treasurer if you have any questions.
1) 2008-09 Annual Funding Application
*Applications due by noon on Sunday, September 7, 2008.
All Stanford School of Medicine Student Groups are eligible to apply for programmatic funding from SMSA. The Annual Funding application process takes place every fall to provide group funding for the fiscal year (September 1 to August 31). In the past this has been an entirely paper process, but SMSA has recently developed an online application process. Use the link above to read the funding guidelines and to submit your application(s).
2) Group Conference Travel Application
*Applications accepted on a rolling basis until all group conference travel funding has been disbursed.
Conference travel awardees are responsible for knowing, understanding, and abiding by the group conference travel guidelines and stipulations in the application above as well as any specific instructions from the SMSA Treasurer.
3) Gardner Faculty Mentorship Events Application
*Applications accepted on a rolling basis until all Gardner funding has been disbursed.
The Gardner Fund is intended to support non-academic events that enable med students to interact with Stanford Faculty.
4) Alumni Mentorship Events
*Proposals accepted on a rolling basis. Application coming soon!
Fund is managed by the SUMC Alumni Association to support events which allow Stanford med students to interact with Stanford Med Alumni (either from med school, residency or fellowship).
5) Department Sponsorship
All student interest groups are strongly encouraged to contact their affiliated Department(s) to receive funding for interest group events.
For New Student Group & Individual Student Initiatives
The following two opportunities are ways for new student groups (or existing groups with new projects) and for individual students to receive funding to support extracurricular activities.
1) SPIF Application
*Applications accepted on a rolling basis until all SPIF funding has been disbursed.
If you are starting a new group or have group/individual project funding needs that arise after the Annual Funding cycle is over, please complete a Student Projects and Initiatives Funding (SPIF) Application and submit it to the SMSA Treasurer. Note that the SPIF budget is much smaller than the annual funding budget, so requests should not exceed $1000. Since SPIF awards are granted on a rolling basis throughout the year, it is possible that applications submitted late in the academic year might not be fully funded.
2) Individual Research Conference Travel
*Applications accepted on a rolling basis until all travel funding has been disbursed.
SMSA will reimburse half of an individual's research conference travel costs up to $200. All receipts must be submitted within 2 months of completing travel or you WILL NOT get reimbursed.
Prior to submitting an SMSA individual research travel request, you must request support from:
1) Your Research Advisor.
2) Your Scholarly Concentration. Contact the SC Director to request up to $500 of research travel subsidy per year.
For Social Events
1) Contact the Social Chairs to propose a social event which involves all classes.
*Proposals accepted on a rolling basis. Social chairs will present proposals to the entire SMSA council for a vote.
2) Contact your Class Reps to propose a social event for your class.
*Proposals accepted on a rolling basis. Class reps will present proposals to the entire SMSA council for a vote.
3) Contact Zera to request reimbursement for food for class social events.
**NOTE: as of 10/16/08, Zera no longer has funding to subsidize class social events. Please do not submit requests for funding to Zera until further notice **
Be sure to get approval from Zera prior to hosting the event (she will let you know how much reimbursement to expect either total or per person). Make sure event attendees sign in on a sign-up sheet and return all original receipts to Zera along with the sign-up sheet.
