HEWAR: Malaika House—Health Education for Women in Addiction Recovery

HEWAR is a collaborative effort between medical students and the residents and counselors at Malaika House, a residential addiction treatment program for women in East Palo Alto. Students work to develop and teach health education workshops that are appropriate and relevant to the needs of the women in recovery. This health education program offers a unique opportunity for medical students to learn about the specific health issues relevant to women in drug recovery, gain experience developing and implementing a health education curriculum, make a valued contribution in the community, and learn firsthand about addiction and addiction recovery. The time commitment is minimal, as students can choose to teach as many or as few classes as they wish. Workshops in the past have included topics such as basic anatomy, reproductive health, heart disease, and stress reduction.  Contact Diana Wertz at dwertz@stanford.edu.
