PALS - Pediatric Chronic Disease Mentorship Program
For those students interested in pediatrics or looking for meaningful patient contact during the pre-clinical years, the Pals program is a great option. Students committing to this 3 quarter-long program will be paired with a child suffering from a chronic ill ness in hopes of providing students with an insight into the day-to-day life of a pediatric patient. Patients enjoy the support and companionship of their "pals," and students learn firsthand about the emotional and social aspects of chronic illness during childhood. Pals are encouraged to meet monthly for fun activities such as movies, ballgames, museums, picnics, etc. In addition, students attend bimonthly meetings (with dinner provided). The invited guests at each class lead a discussion about diverse pediatric illnesses and social issues facing pediatric patients. The meetings also provide an opportunity for students to share their experiences with each other and with the faculty advisors. This class is not a substantial time commitment the rewards are well worth your time. The program is led by Dr. William Berquist. For more information contact students Adriana Anavitarte (adrianaa@stanford.edu) and Krista Rappahahn (klrappahahn@gmail.com).
