WAM: Women And Medicine
The purpose of Women and Medicine (WAM) is to provide a social venue for women pursuing a career in medicine, and to educate about general gender disparities in the medical field. WAM allows female students the opportunity for mentorship by women physicians and faculty at the Stanford school of medicine and surrounding area. In addition, WAM sponsors lectures and other events that educate the general student body about topics related to women in medicine, including their historic participation in the field, the diverse specialties to which they ascribe, their unique perspective in the doctor-patient relationship, and their own occasional role as patients in the healthcare system. WAM explores the status of women cross-culturally, and provides the basis for a community of women from all backgrounds and interests. As an organization comprised of medical students of all years, WAM will have the flexibility to change over time according to the desires and objectives of its members.
